One of UK clubland’s leading institutions goes, literally, up in smoke, as Sheffield's most-loved club burns to the ground
Monday (June 18) saw one of the best-loved and best-known clubbing venues in the UK destroyed by fire.
At 5pm, a passerby dialled 999 when he noticed black smoke pouring out of Gatecrasher One in Sheffield. By 7pm, police were evacuating neighbouring offices and a nearby student hall of residence; at 7.20pm, part of Gatecrasher One (formerly The Republic) collapsed. Happily, though, no-one is believed to have been injured in the blaze.
At the time of writing, the cause of the fire is unknown.
