DJ Equipment Reviews Numark iDJ

Verdict :
Perfect for iPod parties, whether you’re a DJ or not.

Numark iDJFirstly, big ups to Numark for naming this two-channel mixer ‘iDJ’… frankly we couldn’t think of a better name if we tried! Secondly we should stress this is not professional DJ equipment but a consumer product – though it will clearly appeal to DJs as well as non-DJing iPod owners generally.

One thing to get out the way first is that this product does not add pitch adjustment to the iPod, so you can forget seamless beatmixing until Apple update the iPod’s software to allow it (and how long can that be?). However, in almost all other respects the iDJ gives you everything you need to mix music.

There’s two inputs, each with gain and 3-band EQ. There’s switchable line/phono inputs that you can use for external sources (and also record onto the iPod via) and there’s the normal upfaders, crossfader and cue controls you’d expect from any DJ mixer. What you won’t find on any other DJ mixer though is the transport controls and jog dials that make navigating the iPod’s menus a breeze. Or the video output for viewing photos from your iPod on a TV.

So what’s the iDJ good for then? Well, it’s without doubt the best (and coolest) device available for using at the ‘iPod parties’ that are all the rage at the moment. But I could also see this in a lot of DJs’ living rooms being used for impromptu ‘after hours’ sessions. In fact, it could just be the ultimate gadget for anyone in the music industry. Apart from the iPod itself of course!
